Learning Curves.

My life feels like one very steep learning curve at the moment. I have to say that this is not a negative comment, I like learning but it can, at times, be a frustrating business. For example, I had a great idea for a scarf, I spun the yarn and drew out the design in my 'Knitter's Graph Paper Journal' and got all excited and cast on. Then I realised why scarves don't tend to have things like colour work or vertical stripes! Who wants to wear a scarf that is noticeably inside out at times and has yarn being carried over? No wonder they have horizontal stripes - which I just don't feel inspired to knit at the moment. My Mum (who is the font of all crafty knowledge) pointed out that I could do my design if I knitted the scarf as a tube but the yarn I have spun wouldn't lend itself to that I don't think. So here it is, plain but still beautiful.

The yarn is a lovely, soft, bluey grey merino which I have spun as a slub yarn and spiral plied with a blue metallic thread with tiny blue beads.

The other, almost vertically steep learning curve in my life at the moment will have already been spotted by the eagle eyed amongst you - I have finally opened my Etsy shop! (Pause for a big fanfare.) Goodness me, it took a bit of doing and I still have lots of things to list and fill it up with but my dream is being realised - I have even (huge gasp) made a sale!!!!!!!!!!!

My reading is also a learning curve as I am, again, preparing a lecture from Steiner's Philosophy of Freedom for study group tomorrow. It takes a fair bit of work to get to grips with and I can imagine coming back to reread it periodically to grasp a little bit more each time.

In other Misty Cottage news I would just like to take a moment to say how much I love these guys (and girls).

Each afternoon when I go out to feed the poultry they come running to see me. Yes I know it is cupboard - or maybe bucket - love but still, hens and ducks tend to run away even when you are bringing food or water but turkeys are very friendly and sociable.

  1. There is nothing like hand spun yarn! Good luck with your scarf. I think it will look great with all that texture.

  2. Love the handspun scarf! On a side note, instead of a tube you could do double knit scarf. Its knit similar to a tube but instead of it having a hole down the middle, and the carries being on the inside, the colors will switch sides every time you color change.

  3. Our turkeys are heritage breeds, and not only are they friendly, but the toms, that everyone warned us of, are very docile, even with our babies and toddlers. They do go after my wedding ring because of the sparkle. We love chicken and turkey therapy. :-)

  4. Your scarf looks so lovely and soft. I would love to spin my own yarn one day. After being chased by a huge mad turkey at a zoo, I have been afraid of having my own. Nice to see they can be friendly. Pam in Norway

    1. I can most definitely recommend spinning your own yarn Pam, it is one of my favourite things to do - and then I get to knit it which is one of my other favourite things to do!
